Pancake Pandemonium!
From Pancakes to Super Pancakes
It’s that time of year again where we all end up with misshapen pancakes stuck to the ceiling, batter flung all over the kitchen and sticky fingers happily making prints around the house…but despite the inevitable mess, we just can’t get enough of Pancake Day!
The History Behind Pancake Day
As most of us well know, Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) in the traditional Christian calendar marks the eve of Lent and for Anglo-Saxon Christians was a day where they would be called to confession to be ‘shriven’ (absolved of one’s sins).
But why pancakes?
With Lent being a traditional period of fasting, Shrove Tuesday became the last opportunity to use up remaining eggs and butter, and the pancake recipe offered the perfect opportunity to do so!
Of course, it’s now become a staple event in the calendar and although the traditional basic recipe remains very similar, with an array of toppings both sweet and savoury, alternative ingredients and increasingly artistic designs, the humble pancake has most definitely evolved since those early days…
Pancake art has now become a thing…
There was a stage where it dominated social media feeds and for good reason – some of them are actually really quite impressive. Who knew such creations could be made with batter?!
If you fancy getting jazzy with your pancake batter, all you need is a squeeze bottle which you can pick up cheaply online or in a shop like Robert Dyas or Hobbycraft. Then it’s simply a matter of patience and practice – famous last words…!

You could even try adding cocoa or food colouring to make your pancakes and pancake art even more impressive!
