A lush and beautiful spot in the centre of London discover The Garden Museum, a hidden Southbank gem. With an award-winning cafe, a climbable medieval tower and a collection of filled with historical and nostalgic wonders it's a must-visit whether your family are plant lovers or not. 

Plus take a wander down the garden path with Ladybird Books in a nostalgic exhibition celebrating the iconic illustrated books and the impact they made in teaching children about the natural world. The instantly recognisable artwork from the ‘golden age’ of Ladybird Books will be discovered by a whole new generation of children in this family-friendly exhibition.

  • See original artworks from beloved titles like  the What to look for series, British Wildflowers, Garden Flowers, British Birds and their Nests, The Life of a Honey Bee, Pets and Trees
  • This heart-warming collection of illustrations will take visitors back to the innocence and joy of playing in the garden as a child

21 Oct 2019 & 26 Oct 2019 - BUILDING BUGS -1pm - 3pm

Head to the museum for a family workshop and create a 3D insect

Take inspiration from the creatures found in What to Look For in the Garden: A Ladybird Books Exhibition to create your own creepy crawly. Families will work with artist Bethan Durie and experiment with new techniques such as weaving and threading to construct their bug using natural and upcycled materials. Suitable for ages 3+, all children must be accompanied by an adult.

23 Oct 2019 - FALLING LEAVES -1pm - 3pm

Work as a family to create your own hanging leaf mobile.

Join artist Bethan Durie and experiment with weaving, tying and cutting techniques to construct a cascading creation of leaves. Take inspiration from images found in What to Look For in the Garden: A Ladybird Books Exhibition, and work with both natural and upcycled materials. Suitable for ages 3+, all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dates: 

  • Use by 27th October 2019
  • Please note that the museum is closed on the first Monday of March, April, August, October and November for general maintenance.
  • Please note that the tower closes one hour before the Museum’s closing time. In inclement weather the tower may be closed for safety reasons, please call on the day of your visit if you would like confirmation that the tower is open.
  • Every Friday from 3pm-5pm the Sackler Garden will be a Silent Space with no phones or conversation, an opportunity to relax and connect with nature.

Museum opening times

  • Open Sunday–Friday 10.30am–5.00pm
  • Saturday 10.30am–4.00pm

Café opening times

  • Lunch is served from 12pm – 3pm daily (12pm – 2pm on Saturdays).
  • Dinner is served on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 6pm – 9pm. 
  • Due to the busy lunch period, the restaurant only serves meals from 12 – 3pm, but outside this time tea, coffee and fresh pastries are available.
