Looking for a free activity to keep the kids entertained (and learning!) over the summer holidays? The Summer Reading Challenge 2026 from The Reading Agency is back with a fantastic new theme that’s sure to strike a chord with young readers – Read to the Beat.
This summer, The Reading Agency invites children to discover the joy of reading through Read to the Beat! — the music-themed Summer Reading Challenge 2026.
With a fantastic collection of books inspired by music from around the world, children can explore stories, poetry, graphic novels, and non-fiction for all reading levels. Best of all, books are FREE to borrow from your local library. As part of the National Year of Reading, libraries are encouraging families to make reading part of their summer adventures. A Summer Full of Stories and Music
This year’s Read to the Beat theme celebrates the exciting connection between books and music. From stories packed with rhythm and adventure to inspiring tales of musicians, songwriters and performers, children will be encouraged to explore books that get their imaginations singing.
The colourful new artwork has been created by award-winning author and illustrator Harry Woodgate, bringing this year’s musical adventure to life. The challenge is also part of the UK’s National Year of Reading 2026, highlighting the importance of reading for pleasure and making books part of everyday family life.
How Does the Summer Reading Challenge Work?
It’s wonderfully simple!
Head to your local library, sign up for free and let your child choose six library books to read over the summer holidays. Every book counts – whether it’s a picture book, graphic novel, non-fiction title, audiobook or eBook borrowed through the library.
As children complete their reading, they’ll collect rewards along the way, with a certificate and medal (or similar prizes depending on your local library) waiting at the finish line.
More Than Just Books
The Summer Reading Challenge isn’t only about reading. Libraries across the country will also be hosting free family-friendly events inspired by the Read to the Beat theme. Expect storytelling sessions, crafts, music-making, creative workshops and plenty of opportunities for children to make new friends while having fun. Activities vary by library, so it’s worth checking what’s happening in your local area.

The long summer break can sometimes mean children’s reading confidence takes a dip, often referred to as the “summer slide.” The Summer Reading Challenge helps keep young minds engaged without feeling like homework.
