2026: The Year of Reading — A Family Celebration
2026 is penned as the National Year of Reading, a UK-wide campaign designed to get everyone enjoying books again. From children to adults, it’s about making reading fun, exciting, and part of everyday life.
Launched by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust, the campaign encourages families to explore reading together through activities, events, and special partnerships. It also aims to bring books into cultural experiences like museums, theatres, and community events, so reading is easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
Whether it’s sharing a story at bedtime, joining a local library event, or discovering a new book together, 2026 is all about making reading a happy, family-friendly habit. Between busy schedules and noisy days, it’s a chance to slow down and enjoy some quality time with a book.
From bedtime stories and picture books to comics, novels, and audiobooks on long journeys, reading has always been part of our family life and this year LittleBird are happy to champion this campaign, and ‘Go All In’ to spread the word and reconnect with books.
Statistics we gathered show the following and this needs to change:
Around 1 in 10 children (≈10.3%) aged 5–18 do not have a book of their own at home.
Book ownership has dipped slightly compared with previous years, especially among older children.
Among younger children (ages 5–8), roughly 1 in 8 to 1 in 5 may not own books.
Book ownership strongly affects reading habits: children without books at home are less likely to enjoy reading, read frequently, or feel confident in literacy.
Why Reading Matters for Families
Reading together is more than just learning—it’s about spending time together. A story on the sofa or at bedtime gives children a calm space and parents a chance to pause and enjoy the moment.
Family reading can help children build confidence, language skills, and curiosity. It shows that reading isn’t only for school—it’s for fun, comfort, and discovery.

Making Reading Part of Everyday Life
Families are finding simple ways to fit reading into their days: a few pages before bed, a chapter after dinner, or a shared audiobook while travelling. The key is consistency, not perfection.
Seeing adults read, talk about books, and enjoy stories helps children understand that reading is a normal and enjoyable part of life.

Reading Grows With Your Child
Books change as children grow. Younger kids may enjoy colourful picture books and silly voices, while older children explore adventures, non-fiction, or graphic novels. Teens may like audiobooks, fantasy, or books that reflect their interests.
In 2026, what matters is that children are reading and enjoying it, whatever the format.

Reading for Calm, Comfort, and Wellbeing
Family life can be busy and stressful. Reading gives everyone a chance to relax. A favourite story can be comforting, while a new book can bring laughter or inspiration. Even a few minutes of reading together can help families reconnect and unwind.

Family Reading Tips
• Keep it short – 5–10 minutes is enough.
• Let children choose – comics, joke books, fact books, and audiobooks all count.
• Make it routine – same time each day helps build the habit. • Read aloud at any age – even teens enjoy it.
• Talk about stories – ask “What was your favourite bit?” or “What would you do next?” or “What would you do if you were that character?”
• Be a reading role model – let children see you enjoying books.
• Visit libraries and bookshops – make choosing books a family outing.

Turning Pages, Building Memories
2026 is an invitation to families to enjoy reading together. Some of the most meaningful moments happen quietly, curled up with a book. Whether it’s a bedtime story, a library visit, or reading a chapter together, every story shared helps build connections and a love of reading.
2026 is the year of reading—and it starts at home.
