In honour of the V&A Museum of Childhood’s amazing new exhibition focusing on fictional pirates and their influence in popular culture this Half Term visit the Museum, dressed up and ready for the unmissable week all about pirates! See a pop-up performance or join fun, pirate-themed workshops then explore the V&A’s collections, including toys, games, books, illustrations and comics, spanning over 300 years.
Suited for the youngest visitors, the exhibition will transport them into a swashbuckling world of adventure from a moody coastal inn to an island paradise in search of sparkling riches. At its heart, a large-scale pirate ship inspires learning through active play.
- Don't miss the first painting of Captain Pugwash, an original illustrated costume design for Captain Hook for the first production of Peter Pan in 1904
- Plus see Lego’s iconic Black Seas Barracuda ship and real eighteenth-century Spanish doubloons!
- Kids can see what amazing history influenced their favourite pirate characters.
- Plus this Half Term there's a host of performances and activities for kids to commandeer!
HALF TERM ACTIVITIES
Pop-up Performance - LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE: THE CALL OF THE SEA (FREE, All Ages)
- Climb aboard, all hands on deck for a pirate adventure on the high seas!
- A playful performance directed by Astrid Hilne with original music and songs by Jo Girdlestone.
- Tuesday – Thursday, 11.00, 13.00 & 15.00
Family Workshops - PIRATES ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP (£7 per child, ages 7+)
- Work with illustrator/writer Loretta Schauer to create your own pirate character.
- Come up with the name, look and personality and illustrate it.
- Monday – Friday, 10.40, 12.30 & 14.40 (80 mins)
Family Workshops - PIRATES PAPER COSTUME WORKSHOP (£7 per child, ages 7+)
- Join artist Francesca Centioni-Dene to create a wearable pirate costume out of a paper sack.
- Monday – Tuesday, 10.40, 12.30 & 14.40 (80 mins)
Family Workshops - PIRATES BANDANA E WORKSHOP (£7 per child, ages 7+)
- Design patterns and arrange colours to create your own pirate bandana, with the help of designer Rebekah Lidwell.
- Wednesday – Friday, 10.40, 12.30 & 14.40 (80 mins)
Free Activity - DECORATE THE PIRATE’S SHIP (FREE, All Ages)
- Design, create and add to a giant cardboard pirate’s ship on the Marble Floor of the Museum.
- Monday – Friday, 11.00-13.00 & 14.00-16.00
