Leaving the House<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Nobody talks about the fact that getting out of the house is the hardest part of the entire trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children can consume a breakfast large enough to feed a medieval army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, three minutes into the journey (along with the chants of “are we there yet”…):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 Hungry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 Are they storing food in another dimension?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gift shop is where dreams go to die and it is always located at the exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your child ignores every educational exhibit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every historical display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every fascinating activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the second they reach the gift shop:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I NEED THIS.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The item in question is usually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 A glitter-covered rock<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 A rubber snake<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 An eye-wateringly expensive stuffed toy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 Something that makes noise<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially something that makes noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The louder it is, the more they want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toilet Situation<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

No child needs the toilet when asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents: “Does anyone need the toilet?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children can spend four straight hours watching strangers play video games on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until it’s time to walk back to the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My legs don’t work.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funny how that happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 You swear you’ll never do it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2b50 Ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family days out can be exhausting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are moments when you’re carrying everything, answering everything, organising everything and wondering whose brilliant idea this was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on the way home, a little voice says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That was the best day ever.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow that tiny sentence makes the queues, the chaos, the snacks, the expenses and the exhaustion feel worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because the day was perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because you made it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you did spend half of it carrying three bags, two jackets, the random stick and a child who mysteriously forgot how legs work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
